Summary
Software Defined Networking (SDN) is disrupting the networking world, unlocking networking to follow the rapid innovation vector seen in computing at large. The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) is seeking a CTO for Software, to lead open source software development to further SDN. The successful candidate will report to the board of directors and will be responsible for pulling together a coherent and high impact software program, benefitting real SDN operations. With half of the ONF budget directed to this effort, the CTO will be able to recruit and manage a small team, and will be able to draw on the energy and problem solving work of the many ONF working groups and contributors. Areas of domain expertise may include distributed systems, configuration management, monitoring, and networking.
Responsibilities
- Assert ongoing thought leadership for ONF in software, develop a software strategy, and gain its approval from the board of directors
- Develop a plan, with budget, to execute that strategy
- Manage software development, curation, and/or community-building to deliver according to agreed milestones
- Develop and execute an infrastructure plan to support ONF- and community-originated software projects, taking the current infrastructure as a starting point
- Develop and maintain synergistic relationships with important open-source projects and organizations such as the Linux Foundation, OpenStack, OpenCompute, and others as appropriate
- Build an effective community around ONF’s software activities
- Work with ONF staff, volunteer leaders, and volunteer contributors to build support for and augment the software strategy in the context of ONF’s overall portfolio
- Promote adoption of ONF’s software projects by developers and deployers and use knowledge of their needs and constraints to assure market relevance and impact of our projects
Requirements
- Minimum BA/BS in computer science or a related field or equivalent; graduate degree preferred
- Minimum of ten years experience in software development, including coding, low-level design, and high-level design; DevOps experience a plus
- Minimum of five years experience in networking or cloud computing including minimum of three years experience in software-defined networking; microservice and protocol or API/library design a plus
- Minimum of five years experience running or participating in open-source efforts, including as contributor, committer, curator, or community manager and an understanding of the importance of each role
- Track record of leading by example including having had contributions adopted and deployed
- Understanding of both carrier and enterprise environments
- Wise judgment and technical acuity to provide critical architectural guidance and feedback, be it positive or negative
- Excellent listening, speaking, writing, and influencing skills
