Aether

  • ONF publicly launched the Aether Project website.
  • The ONF team continued to develop core component features, put diagnostic and monitoring frameworks in place, and automated Aether's deployment and lifecycle management capabilities.
  • A major milestone is that ACE PODs are controlled and managed centrally from the Aether Management Platform (AMP), with each sub-component (e.g., SDN Substrate, SD-RAN, SD-Core) feeding their latest features and maintenance patches into AMP’s CI/CD pipeline for lifecycle management.
  • AMP also provides a monitoring framework that collects data from each sub-component, which in turn triggers operational alerts and provides logging and other data needed for diagnostics.

Ambassador Program

  • We are excited to welcome our latest Ambassador in the Europe region:
    • Djamshid Abdumajitov - Chief Technology Officer and Key Account Director at Jetport Universal in Uzbekistan. He is handling channel sales ecosystem development, distributor/vendor partnership management, promotions and process enhancement;  system integration team management and handling; Service Partner (CSP) building, promoting and turnkey service provisioning; key accounts network infrastructure O&M; service outsourcing provisioning; and partner vendors product line expertise.
  • Check out our Community Member Profile series article about our Ambassador Andres Madero.

COMAC+OMEC

  •  Set up ng40 for 5G SA testing.
  • Started to integrate the valgrind tool for memory checking.
  • Set up Docker Image build and push actions as makefile targets for the 5gc repo, in the onf-master branch. These targets are run automatically in the Aether Jenkins during active pull-requests and after pull-requests are merged. 5gc Docker images are pushed to the Aether Docker registry by Jenkins.
  • PCRF is in the alpha development stage with support for UE authorization and dedicated bearer creation call flow supported.

Developer Relations

OIMT

  • A 4-day OIMT virtual face-to-face meeting took place on November 30 and December 2-4.
  • The TR-512.8 Control model was discussed to provide guidance to ITU-T Q14/15 for its draft G.7719 work, including the use of the Exposure Context and Constrain Domain object classes. Agreed that update and enhancement to the model are in need.
  • Discussion occurred with an operator and a system vendor to provide guidance on the use of the TR-512 Core model and the modeling tools.
  • Explored model representation of multi-source multi-destination bidirectional (optical) media channel.

ONOS/µONOS

  • Gustavo Silva (Furukawa Labs) added the support for PPPoED messages.
  • Anurag Chadha (HSC) fixed an issue in the NETCONF device provider that was causing multiple availability change events when a NETCONF device goes down
  • High availability support for TOST control plane (ONF)
  • ONOS 2.5 release (LTS) (ONF)

OTCC

  • TAPI 2.1.3 interop testing at OIF Transport SDN API Interop Demo completed
    • Results presented at NGON and ECOC 2020 conferences by Arturo Mayoral
    • Public readout in  LightWave webinar with ~180 attendees (link for viewing recording)
    • Private readout hosted by Telefonica with 40-50 network operator attendees
    • Results indicated high level of maturity of product implementations and rapid adoption by all participating vendors of ONF TR-547

P4

  • The Euro P4 event held December 1st, you can check out all the insightful videos, presentations and papers via links on the P4 web page.

SD-RAN

  • The SD-RAN project kicked off a Near Real-Time RAN Intelligent Controller (nRT-RIC) design consistent with O-RAN specifications in Q4.
  • The first release of SD-RAN was on Dec 18th, 2020
  • nRT-RIC is based on micro-ONOS architecture.
  • White-box based CU/DU also part of the release.
  • sdRan-in-a-Box (RiaB), a dev/test environment to launch a complete end-to-end mobile RAN and core solution in a VM or server, was also part of the release.

SEBA/VOLTHA

  • Release of VOLTHA 2.6.
  • Attend the VOLTHA 2.6 Techinar on February 4th, 9:00am PST to hear the details about the recent VOLTHA release, deployments and roadmap.
  • Start of the implementation of ONUs software upgrade (thanks to Michael at Adtran and Andrea at ONF).
  • PM configs for the openonu adapter go (thanks to Girish at ONF).
  • Started integrating ADTRAN OLT in Berlin Community pod (thanks to full team Adtran  and ONF).
  • Created umbrella charts for both a voltha stack and the voltha infrastructure (Thanks to Matteo from ONF and David from Ciena).

Stratum

  • Max Pudelko, Brian O’Connor, and Yi Tseng (ONF) released Stratum version 20.12 in December. This release contains a new Stratum target for Tofino switches, stratum_bfrt, that was developed by the ONF team; it also runs on the Cassini packet-optical transponder. Max and Brian discussed the release as well as use cases built on Stratum in a January Techinar. A big thank you to community members that contributed code to this release!
  • David Gengenbach (USI) provided a fix to the Mininet integration of the Stratum BMv2 software switch.
  • Max worked on countless build enhancements, code style clean up, and bug fixes. He also updated Stratum to P4Runtime 1.3.0, cleaned up hardware default configs to use sensible values, and added initial support for the Broadcom Tomahawk 2 and Tomahawk 3 ASICs.
  • Brian added support for the Tofino software model in Stratum with the help of the community as well as an improvement to the build system that labels Docker containers with the commit used to build it which aids in debugging issues in production.

Trellis

  • Upgrade TOST to ONOS 2.5 (ONF).
  • Trellis Troubleshooting Tools (T3) supports now fabric-tna devices. The tool is able to troubleshoot the Trellis pipeline (ONF).
  • Dynamic interface config support. It is possible to modify at run time the VLAN and the subnet configuration of the interfaces (ONF).
