Open Networking Foundation (ONF) will be exhibiting at Mobile World Congress in San Francisco on September 12-14. Contributing to our large presence at the show, partners and collaborators, such as Cavium, Inc., Deutsche Telekom, Intel Labs, Lime Microsystems, Netsia and Radisys, plan to showcase their next-generation CORD solutions. Rich Uhlig, Intel Fellow and Director of System & Software Research at Intel Labs, provides a sneak peek into the company’s interactive MWC demonstration.

What excites you about being part of the CORD ecosystem?

The ONF CORD community - it’s a diverse and vibrant ecosystem including everyone in the supply chain from operators and service providers to systems integrators, software vendors and silicon providers, all working with SDN/NFV principles to architect the flexible next generation networks of tomorrow from the RAN to the Core to user services.

What are you showcasing at MWC?

Intel Labs is showing an SDN/NFV-based, disaggregated, and open source vEPC (Virtual Evolved Packet Core) developed collaboratively with partners running on an OvS/DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) accelerated CORD infrastructure. This provides not only the features for the mobile core, but significant throughput improvement over the traditional infrastructure. Additionally, we’re showing a Multi-Access Management Service (MAMS) seamlessly steering user’s traffic between LTE and WiLAN networks.

Why should people come see the demo?

The overall demo shows a vEPC and various services running in the CORD environment on standard Intel high volume server platform. The demo highlights both the flexibility and performance enabled by the platform and achieved by the software. Our proof of concept shows how service providers can optimize their edge networks for greater performance and flexibility, while reducing their overall CAPEX.

What do you hope people will learn about your company and CORD?

Intel is leading the transformation of the network to enable the transition to a digital society. These flexible and high-performance networks will pave the way for the 5G revolution that is in development and soon will be rolling out across the globe.

To walk through Intel’s hands-on technical demonstration, visit Hall North Stand N.332 from September 12-14, 2017. We look forward to seeing you there!
