Aether is the first open source 5G Connected Edge platform for enabling enterprise digital transformation. It provides mobile connectivity and edge cloud services for distributed enterprise networks using licensed, unlicensed and lightly-licensed (CBRS) spectrum. This live demonstration of Aether showcases all the fundamental building blocks of Aether offered as a managed service.

The demonstration features an enterprise portal for configuring dedicated network slices and QoS for mission critical applications. Connected devices such as mobile phones, cameras and other IoT devices associated with different slices can be flexibly assigned to different edge applications thereby extending the slicing concept to the edge servers. Network administrators can view network slice health, RAN status and connected device information via the portal.  Intelligent edge applications leveraging AI/ML platforms like OpenVINO can reach back into the Aether network to change network parameters to offer superior services by leveraging Aether's rich APIs.

The SD-RAN project is an open source implementation of the O-RAN architecture, and includes a near-real-time RIC (nRT-RIC) and a set of exemplar xApps for controlling the RAN. Recently, ONF and Deutsche Telekom deployed the first fully disaggregated outdoor SD-RAN trial in Berlin, interconnecting components from over 8 vendors using the SD-RAN RIC. The trial is also operationalized leveraging ONF's Aether platform and SD-Core dual-mode 5G/4G mobile core.

Aether hosts the Radisys containerized CU while the Intel® Smart Edge Open software toolkit hosts the Radisys DU to enable cloud-native deployment of the RAN workload with optimization on the 3rd Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor and Intel® vRAN Dedicated Accelerator ACC100. The Radisys CU and DU are integrated with ONF’s nRT-RIC, xApps and SD-Core 5G core. Aether’s components are interconnected with a P4-programmable Intel® Tofino™ Intelligent Fabric Processor based switch to become interconnected with a P4-programmable Intel® Tofino™ Intelligent Fabric-based switch.

Stop by the SD-RAN community kiosk to learn more about the disaggregated use of RU and CU/DU from different vendors, as well as three RIC use-cases: Mobility Load Balancing (MLB), PCI-conflict resolution and KPI monitoring.

The VOLTHA project is a disaggregated vendor agnostic PON control and management system for OLT and ONU hardware. Highlights are production deployments in Deutsche Telekom ("Access 4.0") and Türk Telekom broadband access networks. The deployments offer insight in the technical capabilities of VOLTHA, in the several supported operator workflows and system features. Moreover focus is placed on the achieved cost savings, increased flexibility, elimination of vendor lock-in through open APIs and future proofing the deployed network via the support of GPON and XGS-PON technology.

The key role of system integrators with proven solutions based on VOLTHA is demonstrated through the offerings and contributions of Netsia and Radisys. Stop by the VOLTHA community kiosk to learn more about this project and production network use cases.

Netsia Broadband (BB) Suite transforms operators’ access networks by bringing virtualization and SDN technologies to the edge (Central Office) sites through standardized, carrier-grade, open-source software and commodity white-box hardware. While being based on ONF’s open-source SEBA, the product also embraces Broadband Forum’s (BBF) interfaces, enriching the PON device ecosystem. Netsia BB Suite is currently live in Türk Telekom’s production network, giving triple play service to an increasing number of subscribers. Besides, Netsia BB Suite will be supporting multi-tenancy (FANS) so that a single PON infrastructure will be shared by VNOs, decreasing CAPEX even more and enabling new types of services.

Stop by the Netsia kiosk to learn more about the Netsia BB Suite. See how it operates with a live connection to the user-friendly site, and learn how multi-tenancy will work in the coming releases. Netsia can also share details of what has been achieved so far and future plans.
