Testing Goals

This event will give vendors the opportunity to perform interoperability testing with other vendors’ software and hardware. In many cases this may be pre-release hardware or software. This is considered a non-disclosure event, covered by the ONF membership agreement. Only high-level results and participation will be shared outside the ONF.

This event is expected to show improvements and progress in implementations since the previous PlugFest. We expect vendors to use this event to test new features, features that have not been interoperability tested before or features that experienced issues in previous interoperability testing that need retesting. This is not a showcase or demonstration event, although vendors may use this as a proof of concept event in preparation for more public testing.

This event will primarily focus on testing of OpenFlow® 1.3. The format will be somewhat different from previous events.

Initial testing will be 1 controller to 1 switch. Each controller vendor will pair up with a switch vendor to run through a series of standard tests defined by the Testing and Interop Working Group. Once standard tests are completed, additional tests may be run to verify basic interoperability of functions required for controller/application specific test plans to be run later in the week.

Once every switch vendor has had the opportunity for 1:1 testing with each controller vendor, we will move on to stage 2 testing with small topologies of 2 or 3 switches per controller. Initial topology selection will be made based on interoperability results from the 1:1 testing. Each controller vendor will run through another series of basic interoperability tests as defined by the T&IWG before moving on to their submitted test plan.

There will be multiple small topology slots to allow as many switch vendors to participate with as many controller vendors as possible.

The final stage will be to enlarge test topologies for relevant test cases and vendors that are able to successfully complete the small topology test cases.

To submit a Test Plan, fill out the test plan portion of the registration form. Test Plan outlines must be submitted by October 18. Please include the following:

  • General Description
  • All required OpenFlow® Features
  • Time Required to Complete Test Plan

Test plan submissions will be evaluated by the Testing and Interop Working Group.

Results will be shared in the form of a whitepaper describing the environment and general descriptions of test cases. In additional technical document will report many of the issues encountered. The purpose of the technical document is to provide feedback to the ONF standards development teams and guidance to implementers. Both documents will be authored and reviewed within the Testing and Interop WG prior to publishing. Public documentation of prior events is published on the ONF Specification – Testing page.

Security and Non-Disclosure Agreement

All participants (one per company) are mandated to complete an ONF non-disclosure agreement binding their behavior and speech regarding events at the plugfest. The agreement will be binding on plugfests in 2013 and 2014. Companies not submitting the ONF non-disclosure agreement will not be allowed to participate in the plugfest. Given the channels that such documents often need to take, participants are encouraged to begin the submission and approval process for this document immediately.

Additionally, PlugFest participants are reminded that all activities will take place on the grounds of an ONF member company, which has a reasonable expectation of privacy and confidentiality on its premises. Participants are expected to respect those areas and information that are identified as “off limits” by the event host.
