ONF to showcase new COMAC and OMEC projects at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona

BARCELONA, Spain - Feb 25, 2019: The Open Networking Foundation (ONF), an operator led consortium, today announced that it will showcase an open source multi-access edge cloud prototype featuring multi-cloud service graphs, 5G Infrastructure Virtualization, Network Slicing and Edge Applications at the #MWC19, Barcelona.

A pre-release demonstration of the COMAC project will be featured February 25-28 at the ONF Booth in Hall 1, stand 1E11.  Collaborators EdgeCore, Intel, Infosys, Netsia, Sprint, Acelleran, and GSLab have integrated technologies to showcase an end-to-end solution demonstrating co-existence of wireless and wireline support in a multi-cloud environment. You can learn more and schedule an appointment here.

The showcase demonstrates a pre-release version of COMAC open source reference framework being developed by ONF’s operators to build converged 4G, 5G and broadband networks. COMAC includes both multi-access and multi-core functions to enable multi-access edge applications.

The showcase integrates into a single platform with:

  • Complete open source and containerized virtual EPC core
  • C-RAN solution with RAN slicing
  • Virtualized broadband (based on ONF’s SEBA project)
  • Disaggregated implementation across a multi-cloud service graph

The showcase has been developed by ONF and its partner ecosystem. Sprint and Intel have provided the 3GPP core capability for 4G Wireless, while Deutsche Telekom provided the hosting for central cloud infrastructure. Netsia provided the Programmable RAN framework which virtualizes the wireless resource management and Acceleran provided the C-RAN solution. Infosys was instrumental in developing Edge Caching capabilities including Content Delivery Network (CDN) at the Edge with a centralized archive.

“We are pleased to collaborate with ONF at the MWC 2019 showcase and demonstrate the potential that 5G can enable for businesses. Through our range of 5G offerings, Infosys is able to offer clients an agile software delivery approach, deep telecom domain expertise, vertical Industry solutions, ecosystem collaboration and accelerators that leverage AI/ML and Automation capabilities to help enterprises build and operate next-generation wireless networks based on open hardware and software,” said Nitesh Bansal, Senior Vice President and Global Head Engineering Services and IoT at Infosys.

“Netsia is pleased have contributed RAN slicing and ONAP integration components to the ONF’s #MWC19 demo.  By offering SDN control of the RAN access layer, operators are able to deliver multiple service offerings over a single infrastructure while delivering an enhanced user experience. This is all accomplished by better utilizing licensed wireless spectrum - one of any operator’s most precious resources,” said Bulent Kaytaz, CEO, Netsia.

“The ONF community has once again demonstrated the impressive power of collaborative development and open source.  EdgeCore, Intel, Infosys, Netsia and Sprint have worked alongside the ONF lab team to implement a pre-release version of COMAC, demonstrating the coexistence of wireless and broadband.  It is terrific to see this comprehensive showcase come together through the power of community,” said Timon Sloane, VP Marketing & Ecosystem, ONF.
